Horizon Europe, the current Framework Programme of the European Union for R&I is one of the largest and most ambitious Programmes of the Union.  Organizations from the EU and non-EU Member States can apply for funding to help lead Europe’s research and innovation, generating a concrete impact on society, research, and the environment.

With the evolution of the Framework Programmes, from FP1 to FP9 (Horizon Europe), Portugal has been a successful participant in EU R&I programs since 1980.  The following is a snapshot of Portugal’s participation in Horizon Europe since its launch in early 2021.

Signed Grants

Today, Portuguese organisations signed a total of 364 Grant Agreements, involving 253 Organisations for a total of 551 participations, and for a total Net EU contribution summing up to € 176.055.695,80, distributed as follows:

  • 21 European Research Council (ERC)
  • 53 Marie Curie (MSCA)
  • 20 Research Infrastructures (INFRA)
  • 212 Pillar 2-related (Clusters)
  • 35 Widening Participation (WIDERA)
  • 2 Missions-related actions
  • 12 European Innovation Council (EIC)
  • 9 European Innovation Ecosystems (EIE)

Type of Beneficiary

Portugal’s participation by beneficiary type is well balanced, with the most successful participating research organizations, private for-profit companies, and higher education institutions.
