The calendar of calls for fundamental research will be back to normal next year. After two rounds of ERC grant competitions that followed an untypical schedule, the ERC intends to return to a regular calendar of calls under the Work Programme 2023.

The preliminary calendar is published, yet the work programme detailing the calls’ full terms and budgets is to come. Researchers can now design their proposals as the calls’ opening, and closing dates have been published.

The total seven-year ERC’s budget is €16 billion. Annual spending varies, but in 2022, the agency will spend €2.4 billion to fund some 1,100 projects. Similar numbers can be expected in 2023, with the most significant budgets usually allocated for starting and consolidator grants (around €750 million for each call in 2022.)
