While the competition for European Research Council grants keeps growing, the budget allocated to this program may suffer from serious cuts as the European Union States try to lower their expenses to face the coronavirus crisis.

Irish researchers point out the necessity for fundamental research, funded by ERC grants, and the risks for European research if the European Commission focuses only on applied research

Nearly 700 projects may not be funded during Horizon Europe due to these cuts.
